Thorn moth, probably the September thorn Ennomos erosaria ?
Thorn moth, probably the September thorn Ennomos erosaria ?

Well, summer is over – it started raining last night, and today was miserable and damp all day, with intermittent rain accompanied by a massive drop in temperature. It’s still not cold for the time of year, just massively cooler than it was on Tuesday. I walked out of the Reception door at work, and found this beautiful newly-emerged moth right there on a plant holder. This is one of the thorn moths, a family that rests with its wings at a more-or-less 45 degree angle. It’s a beautiful thing, with those scalloped edges to the wings, but it’s actually quite difficult to get a good shot of a moth with its wings held like that.

There are several similar autumn-flying thorn moths – for instance the August thorn, which flies in August and September, and the September thorn, which confusingly has a long flight period from July to October. Several of them have that curved double line on the forewing, although some have other distinguishing features as well. This specimen is pretty plain, but appears to have a smoothly-curving outer line, with an inner line that kinks just before it reaches the leading edge. I think that makes it a September thorn Ennomos erosaria, although I would be prepared to take advice on that …
