Down at Tankerton today, there was a bountiful colony of 7-spot ladybirds on the grassy slopes. My son found this black variant with four red spots, which I was dubious about – 7-spot variants are pretty rare, and it looked more like a harlequin variant, but literally all the others were 7-spots. Eventually I dug up another, more usual harlequin, which made things a bit easier; it turns out that the boy’s one was the spectabilis variant.
