Bee fly Bombylius major
Bee fly Bombylius major

This is a fairly unusual pose for a bee fly – hanging virtually upside-down from a conservatory sliding door. Usually they are to be found hovering, hummingbird-like, at low-growing flower in the sunshine. I don’t think I saw one at all last year; I have already seen three this year.
